Guide

How Alpen Pass works

Every screen, in the order you meet them. The app shows these names in your language; the German names are given too, since many people use it in German.

Welcome (Willkommen)

The first start asks two things. Federal state: the third part of the test asks about the history of your state, so pick the state where you apply. Language: the language of the whole app. Under them is the note that Alpen Pass is not a government service. Let's go works once a state is picked. You can change both later in Settings.

The bottom bar

Four sections: Learn (Lernen), Practice (Üben), Exam (Prüfung) and Settings (Einstellungen). Tap the section you are on to go back to its top. From any other section, Back goes to Learn first.

Learn (Lernen)

At the top, your federal state; tap it to change it. Then Ready for the test (Bereit für die Prüfung): a ring with the share of your three areas you know for sure, the days to your test if you set a date, and your weakest area once you have answered some questions. A question counts as sure once you get it right three times in a row. Continue practice opens Practice.

Test areas lists the three areas of § 2 StbP-V: democratic order, history of Austria, and your state, each with how many of its questions are sure. Under them are Path to citizenship and Words. All study is free and works offline.

Tap an area to see its official booklet: its title, who published it and its date, a key to open the PDF, and for a state how many of the booklet's own numbered questions our questions cover. Then its chapters, each with its pages, its number of questions and how sure you are. On a tablet or a wide screen the chapters sit beside the list.

Study chapter

Which area and which chapter of how many, the title, and our own summary of that chapter of the booklet, in your language. In a language other than German, Read in German (Auf Deutsch lesen) switches to the German text and back.

Source names the booklet, the chapter and the pages, with a key to the official PDF. The summary is in our own words, not a copy; the exact wording is in the booklet. Under it, the chapter's questions (free ones, or All with Pro) open in Practice, and Next chapter goes on.

Path to citizenship (Weg zur Staatsbürgerschaft)

A short overview of the procedure, in our own words from the Citizenship Act (StbG), in ten chapters: naturalisation in one sentence; the paths and their time limits; family and special cases; general conditions for everyone; German and the citizenship test; income; how the procedure works; documents and costs; assurance and your old citizenship; naturalisation and the time after. Each chapter names the sections of the law it was checked against and when. Only the law and your authority are binding, and the rules may change.

Words (Wörter)

186 hard terms from the booklets and the test, in four groups: offices and application, state and law, history, and the test. Each shows the German term, a plain explanation in your language, and the German explanation under it. Search finds a word in German or in your language.

Practice (Üben)

Chips on top choose what you practise: All (your three areas), Democracy, History, your state, and Mistakes (Pro). Coming from a study chapter adds a chip for that chapter. The counter at the top shows your free questions done, or with Pro where you are in a round of 20.

Each question shows, before you answer:

Tick every answer you think is right; one to three are. Check answer scores it as § 3 StbP-V does: all right answers ticked is 1 point, some of them is part of the point, and any wrong tick is 0. Each answer is then marked right, missing or wrong, and Why explains it with the source. Next brings the next question.

Free: 30 questions, the first 10 of each of your areas. When they are done you can repeat them or see what Pro adds. Pro: every question, in rounds of 20. Weak questions come first and come back more often: right answers wait 1, 3, 7, 14 and then 30 days before they return, sooner when your test date is close, and a wrong answer comes back the next day. After a round you see your score and how many questions are due.

Practice and the mock exam are kept out of screenshots and the recent apps preview.

Mock exam (Probeprüfung)

The Exam section shows the mock exam, how it is scored, and your last result with a bar per area. Start the exam needs Pro.

The exam has 18 questions, 6 per area, in the order of § 2 StbP-V, drawn to avoid the questions of your last exam where it can. As on the real date there is no help line and no answers until you hand in. Back and Next move freely, and a row of numbered dots lets you jump to any question; a dot fills once you tick something. Hand in (Prüfung abgeben) on the last question finishes it, and warns you if questions are still open. Back asks whether to stop; a stopped exam is not scored.

With Clock in the mock exam on in Settings, 2 hours count down, as in § 4 StbP-V, and the exam is handed in when they run out.

Result (Ergebnis)

Passed or Not passed, your points out of 18 and why: § 5 StbP-V passes you with at least half the points in every area (3 of 6) or two thirds of all points (12 of 18). Each area has a bar with a mark at the half. See mistakes scrolls to every question you did not get fully right, with your ticks marked, the explanation and the source. Practise opens Practice on your weakest area. A mock exam shows where you stand; it is not the real test and gives no guarantee.
